A full-scale experimental study on single dwelling burning behavior of informal settlement

Approximately one billion people globally live in informal settlements with a large potential fire risk, where single dwelling may result very urban conflagration leaving hundreds, if not thousands, of homeless. What is well understood, however, how fires settlement dwellings develop and spread, what influence the boundary has on these two areas. In this work, four different real-scale compartments were constructed ignited under calorimeter hood. The cases include typical thin metal-walled (baseline), no leakage dwelling, lined cardboard highly insulated walls. fuel locations, loads 25 kg/m2, ignition method ambient conditions kept identical experiments. Important parameters compartment development, such as heat release rate, gas temperatures, mass loss wall ceiling temperature recorded. To investigate spread mechanism between dwellings, incident radiation flux around projection flame length measured well. It was found that significantly affect dynamics settlement, current analytical/empirical equations are capturing accurately experimental observations.
